Theta States

Theta States is a series started in 2024 that is currently in progress. I began the series with the theme “Theta States” in mind after learning more about the different states of consciousness that we experience. I am intrigued by how our mental states can be represented by wave patterns that represent brain activity. Our mental states can be described by these different patterns, and currently are identified as gamma, beta, alpha, theta and delta. Theta state refers to a dream-like state that one might enter into both while waking and while sleeping. When I’m drifting off to sleep (or drifting off in meditation), I tend to see colors and patterns forming… like a kaleidoscope behind my eye-lids. I love entering that state. So I wanted to try and paint what I was ‘seeing’ in there. That’s what this series is about. I’m playing with color as a centralizing force for the dance of shapes and colors that I feel represent this relaxed, dream-like state.

The first two paintings are available at The Yard Gallery. More are in-progress. I plan to complete six paintings in this series.
